Climate Change: Not a Hippie Thing, a Human Thing

I’m going to take a break from my normal sarcastic and humorous posts to tackle a serious topic. An important topic. A necessary topic.

What people need to realize is that climate change is a thing. It’s time to get their heads out of their selfish, perfect-temperatured body parts and realize this affects every human being on the planet. Time to think about others.

I had done research on this topic for a policy analysis course. The data shows big changes and not typical changes either. Many, who say “climate change” does not exist, just do not want it to because then it would be another thing for government to worry about. And everyone knows that we have wars to wage and taxes to lower. Albeit, there are some things more pressing than this topic, but it most certainly should not be IGNORED.

Here are a few reasons why you should pay attention to climate change talks:

1.The carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere have gone through many changes over time (it’s been a relative cyclical pattern over the last few ice ages). However, not once have the levels ever reached the amount it’s at now. CO2 is a nasty thing. And WE can help reduce it.

2.The popular pieces of evidence: ice sheets are melting, sea levels are rising and Earth’s temperature is increasing.

3.The scientific consensus is that climate change is occurring. It is not just Bill Nye the Science Guy spouting crazy ideas; a whole load of science centers and academia have concluded the same thing: it’s happening. If you don’t believe me, check it here at –> http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/

4.If global temperatures increase by 1-degree-Celcius, then 20-30% of species will be in danger (WWF)

5.Who can be impacted by climate change? Everyone. Did you realize these changes in sea level, CO2 levels, temperature, and land mass can impact our food? Yes, agriculture in the Southeast, the Great Plains, the Southwest, and the Northwest regions of our country would all have crop-related consequences. Fisheries and farm in the Northeast could be greatly impacted. Weather changes in the Southeast could increase with stronger hurricanes and greater storms (and that’s where I’m at, so no thank you).

6.Climate change can negatively impact human health. Yes your health! If none of what I have said so far worries you, you should at least be a wee concerned about your potential health problems. Hotter days causes more heat-related disorders, sicknesses, total body health. More CO2 in the air can increase lung-related and breathing disorders. An increase in dangerous weather phenomena across the country can impact your health (i.e. worsened droughts in the West, larger hurricanes in the southeast, dangerous flooding, etc.)
